Tour - Event 4 (Flagship event of Hunter
Tour)
Sunday - 3 June 2006
Location: Cypress Lakes
The 2007 Cypress Lakes Classic was played in glorious conditions with a gentle
mist lifting from the first Fairway as the leading group played their Tee shots.
A field of 15 players took news of the handicap adjustments in sporting manner
on the first Tee and all groups commenced play with an aggregate handicap of 70.
Evidently this system will not be adopted at the Killara Open but why would
anyone worry about that!!!?
The course was in perfect condition with the greens accepting a well struck long
iron ( so I'm told ) and the Fairways offering gentle run. Dams were at a low
level but not low enough to prevent several lost balls, sadly.
There were a number of outstanding rounds as the scorecard will reveal but
particular credit must be given to Phil 'The Caresser' Stabback and his team of
PT and JF who recorded a remarkable score of 88 in the team aggregate.
Peter Thornton showed that practice does make perfect by carding an outstanding
22 points for the back 9, while John Ferreira recorded 18 & 17 for his two
halves.
Rob Miller overcame the disappointment of being insulted by a handicap of 18
with a very solid 19/19 split for 38 points. Gary Skulander and Rob 'Vocal
chords' Lowndes commentated their way around with Rob pausing to secure a
wonderful Birdie on the nearest the pin 11th. A feat which he acclaimed with
great gusto.
Early favourites Rowe, Baker & Burns failed to live up to the pre-match hype as
a team but Ian Baker did manage a strong 19 points for the opening 9 while Peter
B crept ahead with a fabulous 20 points. No one could believe Major Rowe
recording a Bradman winning 25 for 18 holes and organisers of the next Major are
already using the word sandbagging in a rather disparaging manner!!!
Alan O'Donovan revelled in a full 20% addition to his handicap but failed to
walk the walk when it mattered much to the disappointment of team-mates
Waddington & Figgis.
And finally to the event organiser and his team of honest companions--messrs
Becker, Chadwick & Hillyard. No amount of handicap manipulation could have
carried this team over the line and they soon found themselves admiring the
scenery and the conditions in between searching for balls!!
I can hear you all saying that golf was the winner and at least 14 of us
"couldn't possibly win off our handicaps". This brings me full circle to the
author of that most famous of Smergs statements and the winner of the 2007
Cypress Lakes Classic, Phil Stabback, with an elegant 20/20 split for 40 points
as well as longest drive on the 9th.
Finally, said Organiser would like to thank all participants for taking the
trouble to play on Sunday and especially those who stayed for the full 4 days.
Thanks also to Gary S who donated a wonderful trophy which will be suitably
engraved for posterity and to Rob L who clocked up approx 1200 kms in 4 days in
pursuit of happiness!
Until next year.
Cheers, Nick
