Individual results will remain a closely guarded secret!
The Hero of the Hunter (back to top)
The Inaugural Hero of the
Hunter took place this year contested by the 6 players who made the entire Tour.
In classic Smergs fashion, the event began with full club handicaps with brutal
adjustments made to those who won
(minus 2 shots) and generous additions (plus 2) made to the Bradmanesque
performer on the day.
The field of 6 comprised the aforementioned 'Cleaner' Butler, 'Sandbags'
MacDougall, 'The Commentator' Lowndes,
'7-ball Stevie' Figgis, 'Long-Balls' Chadwick and 'The Bastard'
Hillyard...................always will be.
The event ebbed and flowed with 'The Cleaner' taking an early lead at Horizons
before 'The Bastard' reeled them in
at Cessnock. 'The Cleaner' swept all before him again at The Vintage and the
only thread of consistency in the entire
series of games was that 'Sandbags' had put on the brakes to come second each
day. In the Classic, the final event,
'The Bastard' again won the individual but along with 'The Cleaner' had been
cruelly handicapped so the Inaugural Hero
of the Hunter who wins nothing but a poor reputation is
Peter 'Sandbags' MacDougall.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that 'Long Balls' hit a drive on the
final hole at The Vintage which almost felled a
substantial tree and still travelled 220 metres uphill while, early in the day,
Stevie '7-Balls' distinguished himself by losing
7 balls with consecutive shots!!! Throughout the four days it was pointed
out by 'The Commentator' that "all you have
to do is keep your head still and hit the f---ing thing"........ as can be seen
from the scores, this advice was heeded
by all except one.

The Cypress Lakes Classic (back to top)
2008 SMERGS on
Tour - Event 4 (Flagship event of Hunter
Tour)
Sunday - 13 April, 8:32am first tee time
The Cypress Lakes Classic
....and Classic it was with the "Hillyard randomly adjusted handicap system"
yielding 9 players from a field of 14 with a
Stableford score of 34 or more!! Full results below.
The team event was played in teams of 3 or 4 with the Threesomes being joined by
"The Phantom", who also scored
very well, generating 36 points for each of the 2 teams!!! With 3 teams
scoring either 86 or 87 points, casual observers
can deduce what a keenly fought contest the event was.
Overall honours for the day went to Peter "You bastard you've taken 3 shots off
my handicap" Thornton with 39 points
off 24 and a new PB score of 91 off the stick. A great performance on a
day when the greens were slightly the worse
for wear ( or, CRAP, as some of the more sensitive players chose to describe
them ).
Minor Major honours went to Peter (7-iron Burns) and John (Patches) Webb who won
the individual 9's.
Webb, Webb and "Gaucho" Ferreira won NTP's and Long Drives with Webby
humiliating his playing partners, The Miller
Moaners, by caressing a huge drive down the 9th.
Highlight of the day was the very first Eagle in Majors history, scored by Peter
Burns who chipped in from another
post-code to record a 3 on the long par 5 sixth hole.
Obviously the concentration required by Messrs Burns and Thornton was all too
much for them as Ricky "The Cleaner" Butler
found 2 of their clubs strewn around the course. As a result, Rick B
actually had too many clubs in his bag and perhaps the
handicap committee might want to consider his future (say, one shot
penalty-----just a thought!).
Thanks to all participants for a great day.
