The Cypress Lakes Classic and Hunter Tour

23 to 25 March 2022

TD and Organiser  Nick Hillyard

The Event

The 26th Hunter Tour took place over three days of excessive wine consumption, great food and an abundance of rain and in between some hardy tourists took to the fairways/waterways!  All courses were in surprisingly playable condition and thanks to those who played on all three days.  Those who withdrew on the Thursday actually missed the best conditions of the tour as the vintage had drained remarkably well.

Details of each event are summarised below.

Course rating meant Smergs handicaps needed no adjustment.  Steve U's brother Phil was in OZ for Steve's daughter Laura's wedding and joined us for the day before the big wedding on Saturday.  The rain and thunder held off until after we finished and Steve U won the balls and lost a shot before heading home for the big event.

After waiting for hours for the rain to stop the radar finally showed the storm cells were about to pass Cessnock so 8 enthusiasts took to the carts around 2:00pm to play the front nine only.  Course was in amazing condition in spite of the rain and Nick prevailed to lose a shot.  Handicaps were SMERGS adjusted by the gold tees slope card.

Day 3  Friday 25 March 2022,  The Cypress Lakes CLASSIC

Surprisingly the course was in excellent, though slightly moist, condition for The Major on a cool fine morning.  Handicaps were again SMERGS adjusted to the local White tee ratings (which meant mostly no change!).  Steve Figgis and Ken Miller won the coveted trophy with PT and JW sharing the spoils on the front 9 and PB winning the back 9.  This outcome will surprise several players as there have been many recounts of the cards!!  NTP and LD were won by JW & KM respectively.  The team event was shared between Teams 1 & 3.  Teams scores were best score on first 6 holes, best two scores on next 6 and best three scores on final 6.

All in all another successful tour and thanks are due to all those who participated in all or part of the Tour. Apologies to Mike Bell who withdrew following a wet weather warning which proved to be a false alarm.  Thanks are also due to Mike for his generous contribution of enough balls to send the Vintage players home with more balls than they lost on the day!!

Probably the best assortment of wines in the history of the event and, perhaps correspondingly, the lowest scores on the courses.  Thanks to everyone for support.

TD Nick (with special thanks to Nick from all who came)
