Second Monash May Masters (MMM)

Monash Country Club – Thursday, 3 June 2021, 7:30am, $85 each

TD Peter Burns, Acting TD John Webb

The Event

Burnsie's second renewal of the Monash May Major was confusingly played in June. We managed to beat the worst of the weather, but the first nine was played in overcast conditions, and light drizzle at times in the second half of the round. The course was in excellent condition apart from the greens which had been sanded with “kiln-dried sand” the previous evening. This material stuck to the golf ball like shit to a blanket and proved an annoyance all the way round. We battled on bravely and a number of good scores were recorded. The Monash greens are notoriously quick, but there was some relief under these conditions.

Handicaps were latest SMERGS adjusted to bring players closer to normal handicap conditions with a slight further adjustment for higher markers to reflect the slope differential from Monash to Northbridge. Players with Smergs Handicap under 10 added 9 shots to handicap, 10-19 added 10, 20 and over added 11..

Six Mystery Holes were chosen by the acting TD in advance of play that turned out to be holes 7 – 12. The ATD had also allocated random pairings and the team mystery prize was determined by the better ball stableford score on each of the mystery holes. None of the pairs actually played with each other. In the tradition of embarrassing coincidences in this endeavour, the ATD paired with Tim Becker to claim the prize, with 20 points, well ahead of second placed Butler and Chadwick on 15 points.

The mystery event was just the start of the issue with the Team 2 (Webb, Butler and Skulander) claiming the prize for best Team score, best ball on the first six holes, best two on the next six and then best three on the final six. Scores Team 1 72, Team 2 88, Team 3 83 and Team 4 73.

Interesting to compare the scores with the first edition! The handicaps were probably on average 1-2 shots higher today, but the average score last time was 22.3 with nobody over 30. Today average was 29.5 with 6 of the 13 players getting to 30 or more.

After this result the acting TD may not be allowed to officiate again! Thanks to all for playing. The Burns generosity in providing many additional balls was appreciated by all, especially the Acting TD.
