The Obelisk (back to top)

Sunday 6 November 2005

2005 titleholder: Peter Thornton

The Event: Yes, it’s the three club event,  ….. now which irons to take??

Tournament Organiser: Nick Hillyard

The Day: See results

                 The Bobbick    (back to top)

(or The Golden Putter)

2005 titleholder: Peter Thornton, 4 Dec 05

The Event: At the Tour Organiser's discretion, awarded for most putts or least putts on the "back nine".

Tournament Organiser: Nick Hillyard

The Day: Peter Thornton with just 12 putts and a wipe on the last hole - how did he do it???  Read on .......

"A scurrilous rumour has been published on the website about my performance on the 18th in scoring a wipe while still taking out the golden putter - truth is I was lucky to make the green at all let alone get the ball down the hole in one putt.

Shot 1 - Off the tee - a mighty lash with the driver - club slides effortless under the ball which pops up vertically and lands about ten feet away in GUR. Shot 2 - after a drop, a shank with the four iron down to the tree where Nick likes to leave his buggy on 13. Shot 3 - a six iron to soar over the tree onto the green but it doesn't - lands under a tree instead. Shot 4 - the wedge - pops onto the green , runs past the flag into the sloping fringe at the back Shot 5 - off the green with the putter - ball takes off down the slope, slows past the pin, then accelerates to the edge and down to the 14th tee box. Shot 6 - the sandwedge - jams on the top of the slope runs back to my feet
(nearly)
Shot 7 - the putter - whack up the slope past the pin (ball knows pin quite well by now) Shot 8 - the putter finally on the green - a long putt across the slope started with a 10 degree deviated line uphill; struck with a 300 mm backswing, with firm contact, balls moves off on intended line and commences an initially slow spiral trajectory with a sharp late curl into to the cup - no worries! 8 shots - no points - one putt - magic!

I deserved the golden putter for that effort alone!!
Peter Thornton"

Mother Mary McKillop Miracle Cup   (back to top)

Thursday 26 January 2006

Tournament Organiser: Nick Hillyard and Rick Butler in the authorised absence of Peter Thornton

The Event:  The 2006 MMMMC was played at Royal Northbridge on Australia Day in benign conditions with an impressive field of 14 participants.

Acknowledgement was given to the new Super Veteran status achieved by Bruce Rowe during the week. Bruce now joins Phil Alexander in this playing category.

In the absence of Official Tournament Director, Peter Thornton, the excitement on the first Tee was enhanced by the sight of two Smergs who arrived prepared to take on the role of Acting Tournament Director. An unseemly squabble was never likely to be the outcome of this situation and after a brief exchange of courtesies the volunteers were honoured to be identified as Joint Assistant Tournament Directors and in time honoured tradition set about changing the rules of the Tournament.

A colossal breech of etiquette was averted when it was noticed that the ball draw was being performed from a random ( and slightly grubby ) golf hat and NOT the official Smergs version.

Two groups of 3 and two groups of 4 were drawn with the customary requests from at least 12 of the assembly who had good reason to play in the first group. Such requests were ignored and play began.

The competitors:

Group 1 (Joint losers)
Rob " Boot Scooter " Lowndes
   Steve " I like Crocs " Figgis
Bruce " The Veteran " Rowe
Group 2
Rick " The Robot " Butler
Rob " Happy Gilmore " Miller
   Alan " Irons " Waddington
Group 3 (Comfortable winners)
   Nick " Paparazzi " Hillyard
Phil " You can't win off my Handicap " Stabback
   John " Gaucho " Ferreira
Gary " Big Boy " Skulander
Group 4 (Joint losers)
   Alan " The Pro " O'Donovan
Tim " Moon Balls " Becker
   Ian " Perfection " Baker
Peter " Pro Rata " MacDougall

2006 Results:
NTP 2nd shot on 11th Rick Butler (contested by many of the assembly as there was no pin to be near to and therefore the award should have gone to a genuinely great second shot ).

Long Drive on 14th Rob " Happy Gilmore " Miller (almost disqualified as he was not seen to address the ball and merely attacked it as he ran by).

NTP on 16th Phil " SOS " Stabback (SOS title earned as a result of his exploits on the 15th where he fell so heavily-"-Like a sack of spuds"--as one spectator commented, that he almost levelled Chadwick Hill.

The Miracle Award went to Bruce Rowe--no, not just because he got round the course at his venerable age as some wag cruelly suggested, but because he holed a remarkable shot from off the green on the 17th.

The second Miracle Award went to Phil Stabback who completed his round in exemplary fashion following his fall in spite of a dislocated hip and a pair of badly bruised cheeks!!

Winner - A MIRACLE on his handicap  Phil Stabback - 19 pts (10 handicap)
NTP 11th (2nd shot)  Rick Butler
 Longest drive 14th  Rob Miller
 NTP 16th  Phil Stabback
 The major miracle  Bruce Rowe
Winning team (15.5 pts)  Phil Stabback, Nick Hillyard, John Ferreira, Gary Skulander
 Details  See Results page

So there you have it--a fine day, a wonderful field, a smorgasbord of excitement, classic stroke play and a worthy winner.

Thanks to Peter T for the (largely ignored) rules and finely crafted NTP markers, Rick Butler for stepping into the breach and actually knowing how many players were there and Nick Hillyard for recording the scene for posterity (and his own amusement).
