Truly a magnificent morning marred only by scurrilous accusations about the handicapping system including a well organised petition which was duly ignored in true SMERGS tradition.
Team results were decided by a new complex system of scoring which clearly only
the winning team captain understood. The system was approximately:
par 3's, best stableford score only; par 4's, aggregate of best three
stableford scores; par 5's, best two stableford scores.

Friday 26 January 2007
Tournament Organiser: Nick Hillyard and Rick Butler in the authorised absence of Peter Thornton
The
Event: Royal
Northbridge presented in admirable condition for the 13th MMMM major which this
year was contested by 11 stalwarts (plus The Phantom) of the Ancient and
sometimes Royal Society of Smergs.
Co alternate Tournament Directors undertook to organise the event in the absence
of the "never organised an event in my life" assumed tournament director. In
consequence there were never likely to be any disputes particularly as the
eventual winner deserved far greater penalties than even the Co-T.D's. could
muster.
In teams of 4, apart from team 1 who played with the high scoring phantom, play
commenced at approximately 6.30 and the first group led by Dancing Queen Robbie
Miller ably supported by The Commentator Timmy Becker and the Spanker Gary
Skulander duly stroked their tee shots.
Team 2 featured co alternate TD's Rick The Contortionist Butler and Nick Bananas
Hillyard with grumbling from Peter Doris Day Macdougall and Alan Out of Bounds
Waddington. Always going to be a tough group to beat with two A TD's.
Team 3 featured the Septagenarian Twins of Mountain Man Phil Alexander and Major
Rowe partnered by Rob Sleep Deprivation Lowndes and Phil Honest Handicap
Stabback.
2007 Results:
See results page. The Dancing Queen, Robbie
Miller won with the modest score of 25 points off what can only be described as
the embarrassing handicap of 21 and thus won the front nine and the major to
lose 2 shots. This brings his Smerg handicap down to within 60% of his club
handicap!!!!! (This unauthorised breach of
longstanding SMERGS handicapping tradition as enunciated on this very website
has been rectified by the loss of only one stroke by the action of the web page
editor (temporary, acting).)
Teams 2 & 3 shared the spoils in the team event which was scored by the method
of the highest score of the group being recorded for the first 3 holes, then 2
highest for the second 3 holes and 3 highest for the final 3 holes.
Nearest the pin with 2nd shot to 11th was won by OB Waddington, NTP on 16th was
won by Honest Phil S and the longest drive (in spite of some rather unchivalrous
remarks from group 3) was won by Rick The Contortioist Butler, with a huge hit.
Congratulations to all for their good grace and charm for Australia Day. To
Timmy B for flaunting the warnings from the organisers about wearing traditional
Aussie headgear and above all to Robbie Miller for taking out yet another major
and accepting with his customary good grace the 2 shot penalty.
Our next major is rumoured to be the Killara Open, to
be known as the IYD Open (In Your Dreams) where there will be a 5 shot penalty
for winning!!! (The Hillyard Challenge)

Thanks to Peter T for the (largely ignored) rules and finely crafted NTP
markers, Rick Butler for stepping into the breach and actually knowing how many
players were there and Nick Hillyard for recording the scene for posterity (and
his own amusement).

Dawn less 5 mins: The Tossing of The Balls

2007 Results: Thank you to those SMERGs who attended
the fifteenth consecutive Dawn Patrol.
Eleven intrepid SMERGS turned up but only ten finished in alternating light to
heavy rain. Was the eleventh man missing in action, did he desert, or did he
simply cut and run? Rick Butler was posthumously awarded the George W Bush
Cut and Run Award for deserting his team in action.
Congratulations to overall joint winners Alan
O'Donovan and Rick Chadiwck.
