THE CURTLEY CUP  (back to top)

Sunday, 17th January 2016

As 9 players turned up TD Nick decreed we could play the Curtley and that's what happened.

Three teams of three, randomly chosen by the normal draw of the balls.  Team 1 had the advantage of high handicaps but that was not enough to catch up to the close results if teams 2 and 3 with team 2 winning by a healthy margin.  Team 1 joyously paid for coffee and the three team 2 winners lost a shot each.

Usual controversy about scoring but, as per last year, handicaps were added, divided by 6 and taken off the gross scores.

19th ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

(hereinafter referred to as ‘The Championship’) for the

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY REPUBLICAN TROPHY (the ‘BEIGE JACKET’)

ROYAL NORTHBRIDGE G.C. – Monday 13th June 2016

2016 Event:

Nine turned up on a cool but not too cold morning.  TD Rick Butler quickly, and no doubt arbitrarily and fairly, picked the three teems of three.

The team competition was determined by totalling the lowest nett score on each hole.  Stableford points quite rightly played no part in the day.

Wadds claimed he only hit two good shots all morning to give him the Longest Drive on the 14th and NTP on the 17th but it also took a countback going back five holes for him to be pipped by Thornto for the back nine prize.

Steve Urwin followed up his win in the Easter Open with a clear victory showing that he is currently unbeatable in an 18 hole major at The Royal.  Interestingly, Steve had the second best gross on the day with 95 hits, only being beaten by TD Rick B's 81!

Rick B's team graciously paid for coffee.  Some very average golf was played by many but a great morning was had, as usual, by all.

The Final 30 October 16.  TD Nock's report:

With all players buzzing about the overnight goodwill message from overseas Smerg AW, and the match referee poised with whistle and white stick, the final of the 2016 DDD was played in great spirit by Messrs Figgis and Thornton.

With 9 players in total it was agreed that the Finalists should be in the last group and once again, Steve Urwin was the fortunate witness to one of the golfing calendars great contests. This years match didn't last beyond the 15th green where Thornto was declared the winner with his unassailable lead of 4 and 3. Early excitement was created by Mr 35, Steve 'Boom Boom' Figgis driving the 11th green but sadly he peaked too early ( not for the first time, I hear you say ) and 3 consecutive wipes secured his fate, with Thornto exhibiting his own touch of magic on the 15th hole where he narrowly missed his birdie putt but won the hole with a 3 pointer.

As for the rest of the group, well they all peaked together, with two teams of 3 avoiding coffee with an average of 19 points while the finalists could only manage 13.66 and the honour of paying for coffee. Fortunately there were no milk shakes ordered as Thornto has now prepared a case for a supplement to be charged when deviants order drinks which exceed the price of a coffee!! The wording for this proposal has not yet been finalised but doubtless it's only a matter of time.

Well, that's the last report from this year's TD who can unashamedly report that he maintained the excitement for a full 12 months while all around played with the camaraderie and joie de vive that is expected of Smergs. Who knows what rules will be created for next years event which is now in the capable?!? hands of TD Thornto. Well done Peter and you'll be pleased to learn that as the newly crowned DDD champ you will only suffer the loss of one shot while paying for coffee.

St Nicholas Cup at St Michaels   (back to top)

2016 Results:

Weather was brilliant and the course was in excellent condition.
Best 2 scores were added for the 1st 9 and best 2 multiplied for 2nd 9.  Unfortunately PMac had to pull out after 4 holes with back problems so the Phantom stepped in to help Ken’s team.
Controversy surrounded the Long Drive as Group 2 claimed that a drive that landed in a bunker which was (GUR) and then dropped on the nearest point of relief (said to be the fairway) should be considered as eligible to win the L/D.  The R and A are being consulted to rewrite the definition of fairway and to add a rule on Long Drive competitions.  Ken is taking care of this.  Pending the result RB was awarded the prize for L/Drive!!!
Thanks Rick B
