THE CURTLEY CUP  (back to top)

Sunday, 12 February 2017

8 players turned up and Ricky B, in taking over the TD mantle from Nick (Brisbane 10's), conducted a plebiscite which decided 7 to 1 in favour of the Curtley, and so it was....

Two teams of four were randomly chosen by the normal draw of the balls.  Handicaps were added and divided by 16 to reach the team handicap.  In steamy February conditions, Team 1 was carried to victory by some brilliant drives from Steve F and putting by Rick C while Steve U and Rob made up the numbers.

Team 1 could not get a drive onto the NTP 17th green and Team 2 (lazily) declared the NTP a draw between Peter T and Rick B (one ball each).   Team 1 lost a shot each and graciously donated 2 of their balls to the NTP winners.  Team 2 payed for coffee.

The premier event on the SMERGS calendar

20th ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

(hereinafter referred to as ‘The Championship’) for the

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY REPUBLICAN TROPHY (the ‘BEIGE JACKET’)

ROYAL NORTHBRIDGE G.C. – Monday 12th June 2017

2017 Event:  Never in the history of Smerging have so many shots been lost in one event and so few balls distributed for the loss of said shots! Supporting the notion that every shot in golf gives pleasure to someone, Nick & Ken tied for the Major with a Net 82 while Gary won the front 9 and tied the back 9 with Timmy B. So, Nick, Ken & Gary lost 2 shots each and TB just the one. Team 1 with NH, KM, TB & SF scored an average of 72.25 to win the team award by 8 shots.
Nick scored a scorching 35 off the stick for the front 9 and almost the same for the next 4 holes! Ken, meanwhile, cruised through the front 9 with 40 shots but followed with a 42 for the back 9 to tie for victory. At the other end of the scale, yesterday's winner, Steve Urwin, went from the sublime to the gor-blimey while Peter T achieved the gor-blimey without even a hint of the sublime.
Steve Figgis achieved 'most-improved' status for his strong back nine or was it for his dreadful front nine? Rob Lowndes completed his round with little glory but equally few mishaps. In consequence, a day which started in thick fog and ended in glorious sunshine, bore witness to classic Smergery. Steve U achieved NTP glory on the 17th while Tim, "set it up and spank it", Becker hit a superb drive on the 18th for his long-drive award.
Doubtless such a result will bring a broad smile to both travellers, patients and those who couldn't be bothered to get up while for those who lost shots, you had better enjoy the glory because you haven't won much else!!

2017 Results:

It poured as we drove into the club but being stalwarts (plus a favourable radar outlook) we decided to play.  The excitement of a huge turnout of 15 SMERGS for five teams of three helped make the decision.  The rain eased for the start then stopped for a while then some heavy rain as the first group approached the 9th hole. They finished the hole and enjoyed a pie and coffee in the clubhouse while the rest of us caught up.  Tim had a bad cold and wisely pulled the plug so just four teams finished with Tim's two team mates finishing as individuals.  Finished in sunshine.

For the team event, once again the best 2 scores were added for the 1st 9 and best 2 multiplied for 2nd 9.
Terrific day and terrific turnout especially with two overseas based SMERGS home for Chrissie.

Thanks Ricky B and congratulations to Mike Bell who claimed he "lost it" at the long par 5 but cleaned us all up!
