THE CURTLEY CUP  (back to top)

Sunday, 14 January 2018

Six Smergs stalwarts arrived in inclement conditions to bring The Royal to its knees. By the time they arrived at the 10th., umbrellas and wet weather gear were the order of the day and TD, NH, declared that numbers were perfect for The Curtley.
Balls were drawn and the eventual winners, PT, AW & JH were first off the tee followed by RB, NH & TB. 2 balls in was the prize pool so 'victory' was a mixed blessing for the loss of a shot. However, pride was at stake and following some excellent golf by both teams, one over by team 1 defeated one under by team 2. Team handicap was decided by adding the player's handicaps together and dividing by 6 so that team 1 with a handicap of 11.66 and net score of 22.33 defeated team 2 with 7.83 and 24.17.
Above all, the rain relented and another minor major was resolved with the winners losing a shot.

21st ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

(hereinafter referred to as ‘The Championship’) for the

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY REPUBLICAN TROPHY (the ‘BEIGE JACKET’)

ROYAL NORTHBRIDGE G.C. – Monday 11th June 2018

2017 Event:  Never in the history of Smerging have so many shots been lost in one event and so few balls distributed for the loss of said shots! Supporting the notion that every shot in golf gives pleasure to someone, Nick & Ken tied for the Major with a Net 82 while Gary won the front 9 and tied the back 9 with Timmy B. So, Nick, Ken & Gary lost 2 shots each and TB just the one. Team 1 with NH, KM, TB & SF scored an average of 72.25 to win the team award by 8 shots.
Nick scored a scorching 35 off the stick for the front 9 and almost the same for the next 4 holes! Ken, meanwhile, cruised through the front 9 with 40 shots but followed with a 42 for the back 9 to tie for victory. At the other end of the scale, yesterday's winner, Steve Urwin, went from the sublime to the gor-blimey while Peter T achieved the gor-blimey without even a hint of the sublime.
Steve Figgis achieved 'most-improved' status for his strong back nine or was it for his dreadful front nine? Rob Lowndes completed his round with little glory but equally few mishaps. In consequence, a day which started in thick fog and ended in glorious sunshine, bore witness to classic Smergery. Steve U achieved NTP glory on the 17th while Tim, "set it up and spank it", Becker hit a superb drive on the 18th for his long-drive award.
Doubtless such a result will bring a broad smile to both travellers, patients and those who couldn't be bothered to get up while for those who lost shots, you had better enjoy the glory because you haven't won much else!!

2018 Results:

A superb Sydney summer day with a developing NorEaster adding to the excitement.  !3 players in total including special guest and super long hitter, who sometimes went straight, David Thornton.

Rick Chadwick was the clear winner before announcing Sally is pregnant with twins!  No one got on the 12th green for the NTP and Mike Bell snuck in the LD ahead of Johnny F.

The teams event was calculated on a simple stableford average of all members in each team.

A glorious day on a course in excellent condition and thanks as always to TD and long term St Micks member, Ricky B.
