Location: Long Reef GC, 7:10am 1st tee time

Tournament Organisers: Tim Becker/Gary Skulander

The 2020 event

What better way for SMERGS to start Fathers' Day than playing 18 holes at Long Reef!

The weather was kind, the company with its usual high spirited camaraderie, and what a bonus introducing the girls into the golfing  morning, the first  time in SMERGS 44 years history.

With a field of 24 we were invited to start off 2 tees which meant we were all finished before midday. Way to go!

Young gun Declan with his steady partner Steve P cleaned up with a massive 54 points to win the Trophy and Pairs Jacket.

Robyn and Bernadine were too good for Louise and Sue winning the inaugural Ladies Pairs and received a Pairs jacket to boot.

A special thanks to Phil Stabback for overseeing the event and doing the finishing and scoring.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to next years event, hopefully with no Covid restriction so e can enjoy teh traditional lunch

CoTD Tim B.

The Obelisk (three club event)   (back to top)

22nd December 2019

2019 titleholder: Alan Waddington

Event:  Normally held the Sunday after the Annual Dinner, the event was held two weeks later and attracted a record turnout of 17 Smergs dressed in Christmas finery.  Also a big welcome to new member Declan O'Donovan.  Declan and Alan are the second father/son combination to join Smergs.
Played on a windy, cool morning on a very dry Royal Northbridge track with three groups of four and a five.  Probably another record in that three groups averaged 11 (paying for coffee), 11.5 and 11.6.  The third group of Wadds, Thornto, James and Lowndesy averaged 14.75.  Wadds stole the day with just 38 hits for 20 points proving that three clubs are all you need.
The large number of balls available led TD Nick to give the majority to Wadds for a loss of two shots while runners up Figgis and Lowndes on 16 points lost one shot each.  This is normally a one shot event as it is over nine holes!
Ricky B sponsored NTP prizes on all four par 3's (nearest in 2 on the 11th) and a LD on the 18th. Winners were Ricky B (11th), Mike Bell (15th), Wadds (16th) and Steve Penny on 17.  LD went to A O'D.

                 The Bobbitt    (back to top)

(or The Golden Putter)

Sunday 27 September 2020

TD: Nick Hillyard

The Bobbitt is a celebration of skill with a short stick played in honour of the legendary John Bobbitt who famously had his penis severed and thrown out of the window by his wife. He will forever be known for his performance with a short stick and the moral of the story is "never push your luck on a Sunday morning".  No means No so go and play golf!!
(Previously known as The Bobbick until extensive research by Peter Thornton revealed the mistake.  Click here for Peter's research.)

2020 titleholder: John Webb

TD Nick's report:  Sixteen players braved the cool temperature at Royal Northbridge to take on The Bobbitt. John Webb took the trophy and sixteen balls for his 13 putts while Steve Urwin extended his outstanding run with 21 points and a 3 and 2 victory over Rick Chadwick to win the Stableford round of the day as well as make the final of the DDD.
Steve Figgis and Gary Skulander were runners-up with 20 points while RB and NH were hot on the heels of Webby with their 14 putts.
Groups 3 and 4 paid for coffee with their respective worst Stableford and worst putting performances!
From next weekend we wait with bated breath for the grand final of the DDD with form golfer Urwin taking on the sleeping giant, Thornto, in what promises to be an intriguing contest.
Thanks to all participants

Australia Day Saint Mary McKillop Miracle Open   (back to top)

Sunday 26 January 2020

Tournament Director:  Steve Urwin

2020  Event

Three teams of 3 and one of 4 did battle for the first minor major of 2020 on Australia Day. Both major comps had runaway winners. Overall individual winner Tim B had 25 points to win (with loss of one shot) by 5 from John W.
In the team event, Steve F/ Rick B/ Steve U kept their miracle ball to the end and recorded a score of 23 with it, with the other teams managing a paltry 0, 1, and 2 holes respectively with their so called miracle ball. Coffee was determined by the miracle ball result (thankfully for some!).
Minor honours to John W (NTP in 2 on 11th), Mike B (LD on 14th), James H (NTP on 17th) and Rick C (minor miracle 2 on 15th).

Sunday,  8th November (postponed from 26th April) 2020 (28th Year)

TD Alan Waddington

Played each year at Royal Northbridge Golf Club on ANZAC Day

The longest running SMERGS major.  Played over the back nine until 2007.  In 2008 and 2009 played over 18 holes.
In 2010 rain prevented play on 25th April and the event was played over the back nine the following day, a public holiday.

In 2011 rain again prevented play on Anzac Day and just four intrepid SMERGS turned up on the following day (a public holiday due to Easter Monday) to play in intermittent rain.

In 2012, played over the first ten holes which proved popular as 12 intrepid SMERGS did battle with the unfamiliar holes.

In 2013. TD Alan reverted to the back nine format.

In 2020 postponed due to Covid restrictions, played close to Armistice Day on 8th November

In 2020

A cool but fine morning with 13 players.  TD Alan played the Last Post before the first team hit off.  No Ode this year due to the postponement  Teams were chosen in Covid style in order of arrival the 10th tee.

In form Steve Urwin pipped the field with 19 points closely followed by three players on 18 points.  Team 1 easily won the team event for three balls each.

Thanks again to all participants in the SMERGS 2020 Dawn Patrol.
Alan W
