2022 Results:

Continuing the tradition of the TD winning his own tournament, Neil McLaren took the title, from front nine winner Mike Bell and back nine winner Rick Butler.

Highlight of the day was the near 2 holes in one off the first tee by John Webb and James Halliday – one finishing an inch, and the other 3 inches from the hole (see photo).

Closest to the Pin (17th) was won by Neil McLaren with Longest Drive (18th) going to Mike Bell. Team 3 was awarded the best team award with Team 1 paying for coffee – although there was later found to be a small arithmetic glitch in this, and the TD has been asked to throw his calculator away and provide 2 balls and $10 to each of his team mates in Team 1.

The pace of play was very good, so thanks to everyone.

2022 Winner:    Rob Lowndes

2022 Final: Rob Lowndes vs Steve Urwin

The long anticipated final was held on  16 October 22 on a beautiful morning.  Steve came into the game after a C grade win the day before while Rob came after 36 points the previous Tuesday.  So it was game on, in front of the biggest SMERGS crowd since July (well, 10 players!).

Steve started off with a par on the 10th to comfortably go 1 up.  Rob evened it out on the 11th by playing the hole less badly than Steve. And so it continued with Steve going 1 up again only to have Rob even it or draw on the next hole......... until the 17th where both missed the green but Rob salvaged par to go 1 up (for the first time) with one hole to play.  The tension was huge as a win on the 18th would give Steve the match.  Steve hit a great drive and Rob's wasn't too bad either.  Steve on the green for 3, Rob for 5.  Steve had 2 putts, Rob 1 to even the hole on handicap, giving Rob the trophy!

Thanks to TD Timmy B for running the event without a hitch.

St Nicholas Cup at St Michaels   (back to top)

Wednesday 18 January 2023, 7:30am

Tournament Organiser:  Rick Butler

2022 Results:

Warm, humid day at St Michaels in excellent condition.  11 SMERGS plus special guest Jake (visiting from Singapore with Lucy Hillyard).
TD Rick, to facilitate fast play, said we could adopt the Irish Drop rule for unexpected lost balls (this excludes balls lost in red penalty areas).  In this case you drop at the nearest point to where the ball was lost for a two shot penalty.
Team event to be decided by simple average.

Welcome return of Declan O'Donovan who enjoyed being a SMERG again while not eligible for the major prizes due to long absences while pursuing a professional golf career.  TD Rick easily won with 35 points spurred on no doubt by the 30+ performance of his two team members.  So Team 2 easily won the teams event as well.

Thanks as always to TD and long term St Micks member, Ricky B, who celebrated his sixth win at his revered course.
